Keelonith Learning Philosophy

At Keelonith Primary School we are focussed on igniting our students’ curiosity about the world in which we live. Our curriculum program is guided by the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and our teacher practice reflects the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0.

We have consistent learning routines and expectations across the school providing a supportive and predictable learning environment for both our students and our staff. The learning day starts with Learning Launch operating across the school where students are explicitly taught new vocabulary which they will encounter later in the day. Content previously taught in English, Science & Humanities is reviewed, supporting our students to embed learning into their long-term memory.

Science and Humanities topics are authentically built into our English curriculum. Knowledge Building and Writing sessions focus on developing student's understanding of the Sciences, History, Geography, Civics & Citizenship and Business & Economics. Oral language, phonics, spelling, morphology and writing syntax are core areas of study across the school. Rich Literature focus units occur termly in the lower year levels with students in Years 3 to 6 engaging in a novel study each term.

The Explicit Maths Program is used for Mathematics instruction from Foundation to Year 4, providing our students with highly structured learning experiences in their initial years of learning in mathematics. Students in Years 5 & 6 continue to deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts through explicit instruction designed by their teacher using Maths Hero. Maths Daily Review and Number Fact Fluency (+ - x ÷) are engaged with daily at school and we strongly encourage families to use the supplied online platforms Numbots and Math Fact Lab at home to support their child develop fluency in their recall of math facts.
